Our figure skaters were up next, and they did not disappoint. Great performances from Virtue/Moir, Kaetlyn Osmond, and Moore-Towers/Moscovitch helped Canada hold onto 2nd place overall in the Team event. They trail the host Russians by 6 points and have a 7 point lead on the Americans heading into the final day of the event.

I just spoke to Tessa, "I think the skate was actually pretty strong, of course the twizzle wasn't ideal. I thought our approach was pretty bang-on."Callum Ngvia Canadian Olympic Committee on Feb 8, 2014 at 11:14 AM

The biggest event of Day 1 for Team Canada was women's moguls. Canada had four athletes competing in the 3-stage final. By the final stage there were two Canadians left, and they ended up on the top two steps of the podium. The youngest of the three Dufour-Lapointe sisters, Justine, took home the gold while her older sister Chloé followed right behind her to win silver.

According to our amazing researcher Paula, this is the first time that Canadian siblings have been on the same Olympic podium in the same individual event (winter or summer)!!

At the age of 19 years and 321 days, Justine DUFOUR-LAPOINTE became the youngest gold medal winner in Olympic freestyle skiing in either gender!!

With their 3 medals on Day 1 of Sochi 2014, Canada's now has a new most-successful opening day of a Winter Olympics ever. The previous best was Day 1 of Lake Placid 1932, where Canada won 2 bronze medals!! Team Canada finished the first day of Sochi 2014 tied for second place in the overall medal count
